THE PROBLEM

What is Anemia?

Anemia is a condition in which someone lacks healthy red blood cells. Among other vitamins, Anemia can be caused by a deficiency in vitamin B-12, folate, and vitamin C. Spread throughout the World, over 1.5 billion people are affected by Anemia.

Additionally, this work is particularly important across the World and especially in the United States. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), Anemia is a serious global public health problem that particularly affects young children and pregnant women. WHO estimates that 42% of children less than 5 years of age and 40% of pregnant women worldwide are anemic.

As with many diseases, early detection has a multitude of benefits for those who are affected with Anemia disease, including reduced costs, minimized symptoms, and an increased number of available treatment options. In fact, a study conducted by WHO shows that Iron-deficiency anemia affects 30% of women of reproductive age (468 million) and 42% of pregnant women (56 million). Maternal Anemia is associated with reduced birth weight and increased risk of preterm delivery.
